The English department
at Bridgewater State University is pleased to welcome author Ben Shattuck for a
reception, reading, and book signing. Shattuck’s award-winning book The
History of Sound (2024) is a stunning collection of interwoven short
stories all set in New England, many in southeastern Massachusetts, the cape,
and the islands, between the 1600s and the present day. Two stories from the
collection were adapted into the 2025 film of the same title, starring Paul
Mescal and Josh O’Connor. Shattuck’s first book, Six Walks: In the Footsteps
of Henry David Thoreau (2022), was listed as a “best book” by the New
Yorker, The New York Times and the Wall Street
Journal. He is also a visual artist, as well as proprietor of the oldest
general store in America, built in 1793, on the south coast of Massachusetts,
where he lives with his wife and daughter. This event is open to the public.
